DOG TRAINING
These books and tapes all feature positive training, which is the direction I’m going in:
Karen Pryor, Don’t Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching and
Training. (Bantam Books, 1995.) This is on the top of my list for a reason: it will help in training your four-legged canine friends as well as your two-legged human friends.
Terry Ryan, The Tool Box for Remodeling Your Problem Dog. (Howell Book House, 1998.) Wonderful basics, even if you started out on the wrong foot, and ways to start out on the right feet.
Gary Wilkes, Click and Treat Training. This kind of training is great fun for you and your dog, and the results are only as limited as your imagination.
Karen Pryor, Clicker Magic. (J&K Publications, 1998.) This is a great introduction to clicker training.
Ian Dunbar, Sirius Puppy Training. Good basics.
Ted Turner (not Jane Fonda’s husband), Patty Ruzzo, Leslie Nelson, The Proof Positive
Series. This is a five-tape series, expensive and rather advanced, but rock solid in training theories and methods to challenge the brave at heart. A must for the true trainer.
THE CANINE ATHLETE
Joan Payne, Flying High: The Complete Book of Flyball. (KDB Publishing, 1996.)
Jacqueline Parkin, Flyball Training Start to Finish. (Alpine Publications, 1996.) Ruth Hobday, Agility Fun the Hobday Way.
HEALTH CARE
Carlson and Griffin, The Dog Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook. (Howell Book House, 1992.) Good to keep around when things don’t seem quite right for your four-legged buddy.
Linda Tellington-Jones, The Tellington T-Touch. The famous T-touch; this will help you and your dog relieve stress in both of your lives. Give it a chance—it works!
CONFORMATION
The AKC’s Complete Dog Book. (Macmillan, 1998.) Read and study the breed standards. That and attending dog shows will help you choose your purebred dog in a smart manner.
BREEDING
Holst, Canine Reproduction: A Breeder’s Guide. (Alpine Publications, 1985.) From conception to whelping, all your questions will be answered. Read it first and you may have a change of heart about breeding your dog and opt for spaying or neutering instead.
Herbert Richards, Dog Breeding for Professionals. (TFH Publications, 1989.) Good photo references for what to expect. Read this and you really will change your mind. . . possibly.
GRiEVING
Herbert A. Neiburg, Pet Loss.
Martin Scott Kosins, Maya’s First Rose: Diary of a Very Special Love (Berkley Publishing Group, 1996.) This last one is a bit extreme DUE very heartfelt.
